Public Lecture 3 October 2013

The social and political satire of Gilbert and Sullivan

Bernard Lockett

"I am a Trustee of the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival that takes place annually in Harrogate; 2014 is the 21st Anniversary of the Festival (2 30 August 2014).
I have been a life-long enthusiast of G and S and, as an author, two of my books have been about G&S; I have also broadcast on national radio and tv about the subject.

My talk will focus on the vast social and political satire that is contained within the works, many of the words and backgrounds being just as
relevant in the 21st century as when first written in the 1870 1890s. The talk is illustrated with CD and DVD music recorded on location at our Festival."
