Public Lecture 4th May 2017

Music in every home, how it all started

SPEAKER: Gordon Bartlett

Gordon has held a lifelong love of music together with an interest in vintage machinery. These topics merge in the field of mechanical music, resulting in a collection which includes street organs, musical boxes, organettes, phonographs, gramophones and similar items, many of which he has enjoyed renovating and repairing himself.

He will bring a selection of these machines to illustrate his talk entitled ‘Music in every home; how it all began’. They range in date from the start of the 19th century to the early 20th century and will demonstrate the ingenuity and craftsmanship that existed in the pre-electric era of domestic musical entertainment.

There will be original machines available to view.
