The Chinese history group aims to study Chinese history, looking at today and right back to the unification of China. We look at the past to try to see what this might mean for the future. Currently we are looking at the present and the recent past, but we aim to cover again each of the dynasties which form the backbone of its history.

Topics we have covered or will shortly cover include the Cultural Revolution; Russia, China, and the unequal treaties; Tibet; Death throes of Empire; the Manchu conquest; the Tang Dynasty; History of Chinese Currencies; the Empress Cixi and a range of other topics. We will occasionally have a session in which we discuss an article from journals like the Economist or Time.

There is one presentation each meeting and each member is asked to present in rotation.

Before Covid, we met in each other’s houses once a month, but at present we meet by Zoom every three weeks. One of our members currently joins us from Shanghai and we welcome those who are interested in China and will commit themselves to give one or two talks every year. They will enjoy themselves and learn a lot about this important and world-shaking country.

See the newsletter for contact details.
