Walking is an excellent way to keep healthy and flexible and to meet with like minded people. Hiking Group 3 is a very friendly and lively group and you are certain to make new friends.
Walks take place once a month on the FOURTH or LAST THURSDAY. We also do a Christmas walk each December 28th. During the summer and early autumn we start in the morning at about 10.30am with breaks for a coffee stop and a picnic lunch. In the winter we start in the mornings and usually end at a pub or café for lunch, with a coffee stop on the way.
During the summer our walks are around 6 miles long, during the winter we walk for about 4 miles. After the January walk we hold our AGM to set the next year's walk programme and discuss how the group is going.
A reasonable level of fitness is required because some of the walks are quite strenuous with stiles, ascents and descents of varying levels of difficulty. Usually the walks are circular, starting and ending at the same point and are always accessible by bus. For members who come by car there is always parking available nearby, but there may be a charge for this. Occasionally we walk out and about beyond Bath. On those occasions we meet at Park & Rides and car pool.
● Only current U3A members are allowed on walks for insurance reasons; however guests
may be invited at their own risk and with the permission of the Convenor.
● No children or dogs are allowed.
● Members take turns in leading walks, likely to be once a year. You are encouraged to pair-up with a fellow member to help "share the load".
● Membership is usually around 24 members for practical reasons of comfort, safety and timing. We usually have between 10 and 16 on each walk. If you're interested in joining us, please phone our Convenor for a chat.
