ROBOTICS AND THE LIKES OF US
SPEAKER: Dr Praminda Caleb-Solly
Praminda is an Associate Professor in Independent Living Systems at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and Theme Leader for Assisted Living at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL).
Her research and teaching subject specialisms are Interaction Design and Human-Computer Interaction. Her research into the design and development of smart technologies to support health and wellbeing is further facilitated by a collaboration with Designability, a national 'assistive living' charity based at Bath, where she is Head of Electronics and Computer Systems.
Praminda has over 15 years of teaching and research experience working on externally funded projects with partners from a diverse range of commercial and industrial enterprise. Her multi-disciplinary background, underpinned by degrees in Electronic Systems Engineering, Biomedical Instrumentation Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science, enable her to address technical issues from a soft systems perspective in relation to human experience of technology in different contexts.
Her current portfolio of projects includes: assistive technologies to support older adults, intelligent home care robots, CAD tools for sustainable construction, interactive evolutionary systems to support web design, and locative media apps for students. Praminda is also heavily involved in Bristol Robotics Laboratory's government funded driverless car projects, one of which, the FLOURISH project, is developing a connected autonomous vehicle that integrates the mobility needs of older adults with a secure and connected infrastructure.
THE BRISTOL ROBOTICS LABORATORY
Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) is the most comprehensive academic centre for multi-disciplinary robotics research in the UK. It is a collaborative partnership between the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) and the University of Bristol, and home to a vibrant community of over 150 academics, researchers and industry practitioners. Together they are world leaders in current thinking on service robotics, intelligent autonomous systems and bio-engineering and, with state-of-the-art facilities at UWE's Frenchay Campus, BRL is recognised internationally as a Centre of Excellence in Robotics.
BRL's primary mission is to understand the science, engineering and social role of robotics and embedded intelligence. In addition to the core academic and research activities, BRL works closely with trade associations and industry networks, and hosts a variety of national and international robotics conferences, workshops and robotics competitions, e.g., TAROS, euRathlon, EU Robotics Week and the FIRA RoboWorld Cup. BRL also runs and collaborates in exciting schools/public engagement projects at a number of locations across Bristol and the West of England.
