Public Lecture 1st December 2016

Diaries and Memoirs from the Bath Archives

SPEAKER: Colin Johnston, Principal Archivist at the Record Office in Bathís Guildhall,

Colin Johnston, principal archivist at the Record Office in Bathís Guildhall, will explore the stories revealed in a number of diaries, journals and memoirs written by Bath residents in past centuries.

Colin has been head of Bath and North East Somerset Councilís archive service for over thirty years and has helped swell the collections from just a few hundred metres to over three kilometres of records in this time.

As well as assisting researchers who visit the archive, Colin is keen to reach a wider audience by publicizing the breadth and richness of the collections which touch on nearly every aspect of life in Bath through the centuries.

In this lecture he will describe a range of life-stories told by Bathís diary writers, from the social life of an affluent young woman in 1842 to a sea-faring Commander shortly after Nelsonís era, and a civic visit to 1930ís Italy by Bath Councillors.
