The Book Club meets at 2.30pm in the members’ houses on the third Thursday of the month.
Each member introduces a book, which may be a recently published novel or one we would like to re-visit
and occasionally, a selection of poetry.
This year for example, we have read 'The Children Act' by Ian McEwan, 'The Paying Guests' by Sarah Waters, 'Precious Bane' by Mary Webb and poems by Edward Thomas.
Recent books include 'The Underground Railroad' by Colson Whitehead, 'Five Rivers Met on a Wooded Plain' by Barney Norris, 'Victory' by Joseph Conrad and poems by Simon Armitage.
After the group have given their general response to a book, we try to move in closer and consider matters such as characterisation, plot and structure, themes and style of writing. We finish with tea, coffee and biscuits.
