The U3A choir meets every Monday morning at 10.00 until 12.00 in the Milsom Room, Manvers Street Church Rooms. There is a sociable coffee break halfway through the morning.
The repertoire varies from madrigals, rounds and part-songs to major works such as Faure’s Requiem, Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast, and Hummel’s Mass in Bb. In April 2018 the choir gave an informal performance of an abbreviated version of Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah to a large audience.
In addition to the regular rehearsals, the choir has had the occasional workshop with a guest conductor and also enjoyed a summer outing to Elgar’s home near Worcester and recently to the home of Gustav Holst in Cheltenham.
The choir is currently singing ‘The Twelve days of Christmas’ in a setting by Bob Chilcott, to sing at the last session before Christmas. They have also been rehearsing Haydn’s Little Organ Mass which will form part of the informal performance in the Spring.
All members are welcome to the choir and there are no auditions! However some previous experience of choral singing is useful together with an ability to read music. Because of the size of the rehearsal room, numbers are restricted and therefore sopranos and altos may be placed on a waiting list at present. Tenors and basses however are welcomed immediately! The choir currently has approximately 65 members.
If you would like to join or would welcome more information, please contact Elizabeth or Sue, our convenors, whose details are in the Members’ Newsletter. You can also email us at the address below, but please state in your email whether or not you are a Bath U3A member.
