Monthly Talk 6th June 2019

HUMAN EVOLUTION: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

SPEAKER: Laurence Hurst

How did we evolve? Are we still evolving? Professor Hurst will address these issues using recent data from medical and population based studies of DNA. He will raise the possibility that we might be evolving at the DNA level faster than ever before.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Laurence Hurst is Professor of Evolutionary Genetics and Director of the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath. He leads research into genes, genomes and genetic systems with the aim of improving fundamental understanding but also with a view to improving healthcare diagnostics and treatments.

He is currently considering, amongst other things, how the genetic systems of organisms (including us) evolve from one generation to the next. He has been awarded numerous academic prizes and fellowships and is currently President of the Genetics Society (which has its centenary this year).
